Solidarity with the detained members of the Communist Party of Mexico - ¡Luis y Omar libertad!

Saturday, July 1, 2017

Omar Cota (Left) and Louis Bahena.
According to the Communist Party of Mexico, two members of the Party have been detained by local police at the city of Cuernavaca. On Friday, June 30, workers and people in the town of Alpuyeca, in the state of Morelos, demonstrated against the operation of monopoly groups in the area. The local police forces tried to repress the protest.

In their effort to defend the workers and the demonstrators, two members of the Communist Party of Mexico and the Federation of Young Communists were arrested.

The comrades who are detained by police are Omar Cota, Political Secretary of the Federación de Jóvenes Comunistas (FJC) and also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Mexico (PCM) and Louis Bahena, members of the Regonal Committee of the PCM in Morelos.

The repression and authoritarianism of the Mexican state against the Communists shall not pass. Omar and Louis must be released immediately!

OSHA Proposes to Delay Record keeping Rule

A newsletter of workplace safety and labor issues

OSHA has officially announced a proposal to delay the reporting requirements of its “Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses” record keeping rule that was issued last July.
The record keeping rule simply requires employers already covered by OSHA’s record keeping requirements to send the form 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) to OSHA and then OSHA would publicize the information on its website.  The rule also prohibits employers from retaliating against workers for reporting injuries or illnesses.
Employers were originally required to send their information in to OSHA by July 1. OSHA announced its “intention” to delay reporting last month.  The non-retaliation part of the standard, which generated intense industry opposition, may not fare as well.  That part of the regulation is in effect, but OSHA states in this proposal that it “intends to issue a separate proposal to reconsider, revise, or remove other provisions of the prior final rule.” So stay tuned for that.
OSHA justifies the delay by stating that it “will allow OSHA an opportunity to further review and consider the rule” and that the delay “will allow OSHA to provide employers the same four-month window for submitting data that the original rule would have provided.”  OSHA had originally planned to post a website last February so that employers would have four months to submit the data to meet the original July 1 deadline, but the new administration refused to put the website up.
It is not clear whether this delay will satisfy industry objections to making this information publicly available. An industry coalition filed a petition last month  requesting that DOL stay both parts of the rule and re-open rule making because collecting the information allegedly “exceeds OSHA’s statutory authority” and “will have an adverse impact one workplace safety and health.” According to the petitioners, the rule would reveal confidential information and prohibit employers from conducting post incident drug testing and establishing incentive programs. The petitioners were the Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Chicken Council and several others. None of that is true, of course, but attorneys must send their kids to college.
There are some amusing parts to the announcement (And I admit to being one of the few people in the world who can find humor in the Federal Register.)
On one hand, the agency is claiming a whopping $6,953 to $19,177 in cost savings based on the interest that employers will save during the five months they don’t have to spend money sending the information in to OSHA. (Those would be national costs savings, not per employer.)  They therefore claim that this effort is “deregulatory.”
They do not, however, claim any benefits lost by the fact that workers and employers will not be able to enjoy the benefits of the regulation during the five month delay.  The benefits claimed under the rule include 1) improvement of OSHA’s ability to identify, target, and remove safety and health hazards, thereby preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths. 2) improvement in the quality of the information submitted to OSHA, and 3) improving worker safety by making the data publicly available on OSHA’s website so that workers would know which employers are more dangerous, and good employers can compare their safety and health records with other businesses in their industry.
Because OSHA actually has to change the regulation to delay the dates, today’s announcement is a proposal and OSHA will accept comments on the delay for two weeks, until July 13, 2017. You may submit comments and attachments electronically at www.regulations.gov. There should be two messages:
  1. Implement the reporting requirements with no further delay.
  2. Do not change the anti-retaliation provisions. The record is full of examples of employees being retaliated against for reporting. Employees have a right to report injuries and illnesses without fear of retaliation.

Nuke base blocked

Friday morning, members of the German Communist Party (DKP) blocked the access roads to the Buechel air force base und thus largely paralyzed the activities in the base.
The activity was part of a long-term campaign of the peace movement against the ongoing stockpiling of some ten to twenty nuclear arms ready for deployment.
DKP chairman Patrik Koebele declared in situ: “We demand this hellish stuff be moved off immediately.” The Federal government must finally engage in the United Nations’ negotiations on a global ban of nuclear arms instead of continuously insisting on persistent possession of these weapons of mass destruction, together with the US and other NATO members. Koebele: “During the electoral campaign the social democratic, conservative and green parties will present themselves as parties of peace once more. We judge them by their deeds—nuclear arms in Buechel, deployments of the military all over the world, and increasing arms exports.”
The communists’ activity commenced at 6 a.m. and were maintained for two hours. Police could disband the blockade only after hundreds of vehicles had already formed kilometres of tailbacks on the base’s access roads.
Koebele announced: “Those responsible in Buechel and in other places can be sure: we will be back!” The DKP made another manifestation on Saturday at the main access gate to the base in which members of communist parties from Luxemburg and the Netherlands participated.

Nakliyat-Is celebrated the 47th anniversary of the greatest worker demonstrations of Turkish history on 15-16 June

19 Jun 2017Nakliyat-İş, TURKEY

Turkish working class showed a great resistance against the capitalist class and their policies that aimed to enslave all the workers and all popular strata. Hundred of thousands of workers took the streets in Istanbul and Kocaeli on 15-16 June in 1970.

On the anniversary of this great resistance, Nakliyat-Is Union organized massive celebrations in three big cities of Turkey: İstanbul, İzmir, Konya. The union is also going to organize a massive celebration together with Birleşik Metal-Is Union on June 19 in Eskişehir.

In celebrations, the anti-worker policies implemented by the government were denounced. It was pointed out that the working class won’t allow the capitalists to take away their rights. The flags of WFTU were carried during all the events.

Solidly behind Democratic Korea!

Outside the U.S. Embassy in London
Comrades joined other Korean solidarity activists in picketing the hub of American imperialism in London last week to oppose the deployment of the US THAAD missile defence system in south Korea, and to protest against US war threats and sanctions against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The protest, called by the Korean Friendship Association (KFA) and supported by the New Communist Party, began outside the puppet south Korean embassy in Westminster and then moved on the US embassy in Grosvenor Square.
KFA Chair Dermot Hudson took the mike to denounce US imperialism saying: “Today the US occupies south Korea with over 30,000 troops stationed there and a thousand nuclear weapons. The south Korean people are forced to pay colonial tribute to the US in the form of upkeep expenses.
“People’s Korea is a peace loving state that does not have a single overseas base, but the US has hundreds of overseas bases and troops that form a global empire straddling across the world.”

Golden State Warriors refuse to visit White House after winning NBA title: reports

The NBA champion Golden State Warriors unanimously agreed to skip the customary White House visit, according to reports, although the team says they have not yet been invited.
The Warriors claimed their second title in three seasons Monday night with a 129-120 Game 5 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, their opponent in three straight NBA Finals appearances.
But the team, led by superstars Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, has reportedly decided by a unanimous vote not to accept congratulations from President Donald Trump.

The team issued an official statement later on Tuesday morning.
“Today is all about celebrating our championship,” the team said. “We have not received an invitation to the White House, but will make those decisions when and if necessary.”
Warriors coach Steve Kerr has ripped Trump as a “blowhard” and “ill-suited” for the office, and player David West said the president was a poor role model.

“All the tactics that he used to get elected are the very things that someone like me, who works with youth on a consistent basis, are the things that we try to talk our young folks out of being,” West said. “We try to talk our young people out of being bullies. We try to talk our young men out of disrespecting women. We try to talk our young people into being accepting of other people’s opinions and other people’s walks of life.”
“He is the complete opposite of all of that,” West added.
Curry has also criticized Trump, who was described as “a great asset” by the CEO of Under Armour, which the player endorses.
“I agree with that description,” Curry said, “if you remove the ‘et’” from asset.”

United International Anti-imperialist Anti-Fascist Front now established

On May 25, 2017 in Moscow, the founding conference took place on the creation of a single international anti-imperialist anti-fascist front (hereinafter - EMAAF). Representatives of a number of communist parties, anti-imperialist and anti-fascist organizations of Bulgaria, Russia, Belarus, Germany, Poland, the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (LDPR) took part in the conference.

In connection with the intensification of the general crisis of the world system of imperialism, which is characterized by the aggravation of the economic and political situation, the emergence of a mass flow of refugees and migrants, the emergence of reactionary nationalist and fascist anti-communist forces, the unleashing of local and regional wars by imperialist countries, the world is increasingly slipping towards a disastrous III World war. In order to prevent the development of a military threat to peace and prevent the spread of fascism, the participants of the conference declared the necessity of unity of action of all anti-imperialist and anti-fascist organizations of the whole human community and decided to create a single international anti-imperialist anti-fascist front.

The conference participants adopted the Charter of the United International Anti-imperialist Anti-Fascist Front, an appeal of the constituent conference of the United International Anti-imperialist Anti-Fascist Front, and several resolutions and orders. The statute of the EMAAF provides for the procedure for the admission into the international association of new organizations that share the basic political principles of the EMAAF.

To guide the work of the Unified International Anti-imperialist Anti-Fascist Front, the Executive Committee of the EMAAF and the Political Council of the EMAAF were elected at the conference.

Illegal settlers arrived in our city

Issa_.jpg

Fifty years ago today, Israel completed its military take over of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. A year later, in 1968, the first illegal settlers arrived in our city. Disguised as tourists, they camped out in a hotel in the center of Hebron and refused to leave. Eventually, Israel moved them to the army compound of Kiryat Arba about a mile outside of the city.

Today, over 7,000 illegal Israelis live in the settlement of Kiryat Arba and around 850 illegal settlers live within Hebron's city center (they successfully established the Beit Hadassah settlement in the center of the old city in 1979). Hebron settlers are among the most violent and ideologically extreme of Israel's settler movement. The carry machine guns, teach hatred to their children, and celebrate acts of violence against Palestinians. They even maintain a monument in Kiryat Arba to illegal settler Baruch Goldstein, who in 1994 opened fire in the Ibrahim mosque, killing 29 Palestinians.
Can you make a donation to help us continue our resistance at 50 years of occupation?

As we continue to mark the years since the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine; the 1968 occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem; and 1994 Ibrahim mosque massacre, which resulted in the matrix of checkpoints and closures we face today in Hebron; we also continue to mark the ways we remain hopeful and steadfast in our resistance. The occupation is strong. But our determination to secure freedom and justice is stronger.

With your helpthis year we will be amping up our resistance.
  • We will teach more children how to use video cameras to document human right abuses
  • We will counter the hateful signs settlers put up in Hebron.
  • We will provide more tours and programming to educate the international community.
  • We will continue our nonviolent direct actions to oppose the occupation.

Your generous gift of $50, $70, $100, or more will enable us to increase our work.

Together we can achieve justice for Palestine!

In resistance,

Issa, Ahmad, Murad, Muhanned, and everyone at Youth Against Settlements

P.S. There is now a letter in US congress calling for the protection of Issa Amro as he faces 18 charges in Israeli military court! If you are a US resident, make sure to tell your member of congress to add their name to the letter.

Spokesman for DPRK Foreign Ministry Denounces U.S. for Withdrawing from Paris Agreement

Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK gave the following answer to the question raised by KCNA on June 6 as regards the Trump administration's announcement to withdraw from the Paris Agreement (on climate change):

On June 1, Trump officially announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement asserting that the agreement is not fair to the U.S. and it brings disadvantages to the American people.

Global warming is one of the gravest challenges the humankind is facing today and the Paris Agreement that called for nationally determined contribution to the reduction of GHG emission is the outcome of decades long efforts to mitigate it.

The U.S. announcement to withdraw from the Paris Agreement is inviting strong denunciation and criticism from world-wide.

The "America First Policy" advocated by Trump led to the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. This is the height of egoism and moral vacuum seeking only their own well-being even at the cost of the entire planet and, at the same time, a short-sighted and silly decision ignorant of the fact that the protection of the global environment is in their own interests.

The selfish act of the U.S. does not only have grave consequences for the international efforts to protect the environment, but poses great danger to other areas as well.

The U.S. attitude towards the nuclear issue in the Korean peninsula is the typical example.

The hostile policy of the U.S. against the DPRK has grown so unreasonable and reckless today that they are even coercing other countries to sacrifice their relations with the DPRK under the pretext of ensuring the U.S security.

It is high time the world stopped pondering over the dangerous ideological trend which is surfacing in the U.S. with the emergence of the Trump administration, but raised alarm and stayed highly vigilant about it.

Whoever chooses to blindly follow the Trump administration overpowered by its bravado should be fully aware that the judgment of history shall take them all as one.

AKEL denounces new attempt to falsify Cyprus’ contemporary History by the government and ruling forces

Statement by Christos Christofides, AKEL Political Bureau member
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4th June 2017, Nicosia
We denounce in the strongest possible terms the new attempt to falsify History by the government and ruling forces, through the participation of the Minister of Defence Mr. Fokaides, at a Meeting seeking to pardon and exonerate Grivas due to take place next Saturday in Nicosia.
At a crucial time for the Cyprus problem and the country, the government and ruling forces, together with the unrepentant admirers of Grivas’ ideas and actions, chose to provoke the democratic feelings of the Cypriot people.
They chose division and to open up the wounds of the past.
They once again chose to attempt to falsify and rape our country’s modern history, as well as to pay tribute for the umpteenth time to the founder of the EOKA B organization and the destroyer of Cyprus, Grivas.
Thousands of victims and war-stricken people of the coup d’état and Turkish invasion, namely the overwhelming majority of the Cypriot people, are once again witnessing the Anastasiades-DISY government’s horrendous provocations against Historical Truth. Unfortunately for them and the Cypriot people as a whole the flag of shame on the enslaved Pendadaktylos occupied mountain range is a daily reminder to us all of Grivas’ actions and results.
Moreover, we also denounce the intended participation of the Greek Government’s Minister of Defense in this meeting. It is a matter of particular surprise and wonder how a Minister of the Tsipras Government can participate and pay tribute to the founder of EOKA B. We remind the Greek government that Grivas was also the founder of the “X” organization in occupied Greece, writing in Greece as well a shameful story for the Greek people. We urge the Greek government and Prime Minister to immediately correct the Greek government’s participation in the attempted falsification of modern Cypriot, but also Greek history.
Regretfully, so many years later, and at the same time as our homeland is still suffering under semi-occupation, the unrepentant followers of Grivas’ ideas and actions, the attempted “purifiers” of betrayal, are relentlessly continuing their efforts.
We promise to the Cypriot people that we will continue the struggle to defend historical memory so as not to live the days of fascism and betrayal again.

A. Batov detained on May 9 during the participation in the action "Immortal Regiment" in Moscow

In Moscow on May 9, Secretary of the Central Committee of the ROT Front Alexander Batov was detained for distributing propaganda materials revealing the class essence of the Great Victory, with leaflets - "This is not your victory!" . Together with him, for participation in the "Immortal Regiment" action a number of activists of the Russian Communist Workers Party of  Russia and the "Defence" trade union were detained. First, the detainees were given 7 days, now the authorities are trying to open a new case against them ("Violation of the established procedure for organizing or holding a public event" (Article 20.2 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation). Why where they detained? Alexander Batov himself answers this question. We publish his letter."Comrades, friends! After spending a week's arrest on a fake accusation, I believed that the story would end there. But I was wrong. The gendarmes will not calm down. At the weekend it became known that a new case against me was fabricated for the same episode. Yes, that's right - they want to judge me a second time for the same thing! The difference is purely formal: the first time I was judged under Article 19.3 ("Disobedience to the lawful order of a police officer"), and now they want to attach 20.2 ("Violating the established procedure for organizing or holding ... a public event"). I do not know why they need it. Apparently, it touches upon the leaflet, exposing the Kremlin's "patriots".Be that as it may, a new court haring is coming, as buffy and deceitful as the previous one. I did not violate any laws, I did not receive any complaints from the organizers of the Immortal Regiment or the Ministry of Internal Affairs employees, but ...Friends, I still need your support and solidarity. Please distribute this information. The more people know the truth, the better. And I will certainly inform you about the progress of this tragicomedy entitled "Russian Justice".A.Batov.Comment from from the Central Committee of the AUCPB. We join the demands of Moscow comrades from the RKPR-ROTFront on the removal of any penalties for A. Batov and his comrades. The very fact of their detention on May 9 we qualify as a fact deeply contradicting the "freedom of speech" and "democracy" that are preached by the authorities. The situation with the detention of A. Batov and bringing him to justice most likely resembles the order in Germany of the 1930s.05/05/2017

Yes to Peace! No to NATO! 29.05.2017

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Communist Party of Portugal
Press Office Statement
                                                                                            29th May 2017

At the high-level meeting held in Brussels, with the participation of the US President and in a context of latent contradictions, NATO announces its aim of affirming its cohesion, namely on the growing involvement in wars of aggression —like in Afghanistan or in the Middle East— and in the arms and military race, conducted by the US, under the cover of the so-called “war on terrorism”.
While hypocritically proclaiming the “war on terrorism”, the US and its allies are responsible for the promotion, support and instrumentalization of terrorist groups in destabilization operations and wars of aggression against sovereign states, as in Syria.
The recent 110 billion dollar agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia to supply weapons assumes a shocking and dangerous significance, as the latter recognizably supports terrorists organizations and is responsible for the war against Yemen and its people.
Recall that of the 28 member states of NATO, in particular the US —which this year alone increased its military budget by 54 billion dollars and increased the budget for its military presence in Europe by 40%— spend more in the military that the remaining 165 countries of the world.
At the same time, the European Union, assuming its role as European pillar of NATO and also using the pretext of the “war on terrorism”, reinforces its militarization and interventionist policy, and several European countries adopt security measures that jeopardize fundamental rights, liberties and guarantees, as occurs in France.
Waving an alleged «Russian threat» to hide its aggressive character, NATO is installing significant forces and military equipment near the Russian Federation. Particularly grave is the installation of the anti-missile system with which the US, with NATO support, seek to ensure its military strategic superiority, worsening the dangers for peace in Europe and the world.
Continuing to foster its expansion in Europe, now with the enter of Montenegro —third Balkan country to integrate NATO after the destruction of Yugoslavia— NATO confirms itself as an instrument of aggression against States that, affirming and defending their sovereignty and independence, have represented opposition to the hegemonic domination of imperialism, in particular US imperialism.
NATO was and is responsible for wars of aggression —always «justified» with lies or false pretexts—, such as in Yugoslavia, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Libya or in Syria, and for the death and suffering of millions of human beings, including the millions of refugees and displaced caused by its criminal wars.
The US are committed to threats, provocations and military interventions that place the world on the brink of devastating regional conflicts and even a conflict of global proportion.
PCP reaffirms its condemnation of the aggressive policy of US imperialism and NATO and of the complicity of the European Union, and expresses its solidarity with all those peoples that resist and fight in defense of their rights and sovereignty, namely the peoples of the Middle East and Latin America.
Portugal must reject the arms race and the policies of encroachment and imperialist war of the US, of NATO and the European Union. Portugal, in full respect of its Constitution, should strive internationally against military escalation, for the respect of the principles of the United Nations Charter, for the sovereignty and independence of States and a peaceful solution to international conflicts, for disarmament and peace.
The dissolution of NATO is a crucial objective for the affirmation of national sovereignty and for world peace.
Reaffirming its demand for and intervention by Portugal to achieve a policy of peace, friendship and cooperation among all peoples of the world, PCP values the actions promoted by the peace movement in Portugal, as part of the campaign «Yes to Peace! No to NATO!» and appeals to the intensification of the struggle against war and for peace.

Lisbon, 29th May 2017

Sim à Paz! Não à NATO!
